The construction industry produces a great deal of waste, especially demolition operations. In 2017, the Australian economy generated or imported 68.9 megatonnes of waste, of which the largest contributors were:
- Construction (20.4 megatonnes, 29.6%)
- Households (13.8 megatonnes, 20.0%)
- Electricity, gas, water and waste services (12.7 megatonnes, 18.4%)
- Manufacturing (10.8 megatonnes, 15.6%)
37.5 megatonnes of waste was recovered (i.e. exported, or collected for recycling or energy recovery) by the Waste collection, treatment & disposal services industry, of which:
- 1 megatonnes (11.1%) was exported for recycling
- 9 megatonnes (5.1%) was recovered for energy production
- 4 megatonnes (83.8%) was collected for domestic recycling.
Maximise waste’s potential
Another way of reducing waste is reusing and recycling materials from construction or demolition sites. Materials from construction sites that can be reused or recycled include concrete that can be broken down and used in footpaths, aluminium, steel, copper, and untreated timber. Materials that are salvaged from demolition sites include metals, plastics, cardboard, site works and vegetation, tiles and many more.
Before selling, recycling, reusing, ensure that the materials and products are still of good quality or condition – nothing should go to waste. We should all work together to reduce our carbon footprint.
Minimise waste
A part of the planning process for any construction project includes coming up with different ways to reduce and even eliminate waste, wherever possible. During the planning of the construction project, project managers should identify the exact number of resources required to avoid over-consumption. Recognizing the exact number needed avoids excess waste from unused supplies. You can minimise waste by having your construction products delivered to you with minimal packaging.
Segregate waste
Waste can be managed efficiently by introducing on-site waste storage areas.
The segregation of waste can be promoted by providing bulk bags or wheelie bins that are coloured and labelled for different types of waste. Employees can also be trained to learn about the necessary segregation procedures.
