TL;DR: The cost of a tip run in Sydney starts at $18.20 to $27.30 just to drive a 20 to 30km round trip, based on the ATO's 2026-27 rate of 91 cents per kilometre1. Petrol makes up less than a third of that running cost23. General waste dropped at a Sydney tip also carries the NSW waste levy, $180.20 a tonne for 2026-27, before the tip's own charges4. In our worked examples, once your time is valued at average full-time earnings, a DIY garage clean-out comes within about $130 of a 2 Marrel skip bin before tip charges, and a small bathroom reno clean-up costs more than a 3 Marrel bin.
You've got a free Saturday, a borrowed trailer and a garage you can't walk into. A tip run feels like the cheap option because nobody sends you an invoice for it, but the cost of a tip run in Sydney is still real and just spread across your car, the weighbridge, the second (and third) trip, and the afternoon you'll never get back. The $30 in the headline is roughly what a 30km round trip costs to run your car at the ATO rate1, and it's the line that's easiest to leave out of the budget.
This guide gives you a simple calculation you can run for your own job, then puts your total next to a skip bin so you can make the call yourself.
How Far Is the Tip from Your Sydney Home?
Start with one number: the distance from your driveway to the tip gate and back.
Pop both addresses into a map app and double it if it only shows one way. That round-trip figure feeds two lines into the cost of a tip run in Sydney, the drive and your time behind the wheel, and both get multiplied by every trip you make.
The closest tip isn't always the right one, because each facility decides what it accepts. Aussie Recycling's centres in Greenacre and Strathfield South, for example, don't take food waste, liquids, chemicals or asbestos5. If your load includes something your nearest site won't take, your real round trip is to the next facility that will.
For the examples in this guide, we assume your nearest suitable facility sits 10 to 15km from home, which makes a 20 to 30km round trip. Whether you're in Greenacre, Bankstown, Parramatta, Liverpool or Campbelltown, swap in your own distance and the maths works exactly the same way.
What Does the Fuel Actually Cost?
Petrol costs for a tip run are only a small part of what the drive costs you.
Fuel first. At the ABS average of 11.1 litres per 100km for passenger vehicles2 and Sydney's average unleaded price of 238.9 cents a litre on 7 October 20263, petrol for a 20 to 30km Sydney tip run costs $5.30 to $7.96, or about 26.5 cents per kilometre. The ABS figure comes from its final Survey of Motor Vehicle Use, covering the 12 months to June 2020, and it's a fleet-wide average, not a car towing a loaded trailer2.
Pump prices change often, so check today's price on the NSW Government's FuelCheck before you head off.
Now what about the real cost of a tip run in Sydney and where it starts to show?
Your car costs you money every kilometre, whether or not the tank is the problem: rego, insurance, servicing, tyres, and the value it loses as the odometer ticks over. The ATO's 2026-27 cents per kilometre rate is 91 cents1, and the ATO says that rate takes into account all vehicle running expenses, including registration, fuel, servicing and insurance, plus depreciation6.
Using the ATO rate, a 20km round trip to a Sydney tip costs $18.20 to run your car and a 30km round trip costs $27.301. Petrol makes up less than a third of that running cost.
Your formula: Round-Trip km × $0.91 = Vehicle Cost Per Trip.
The Two-Trip Problem
If your clean-out doesn't fit in one trailer load, every extra run means another drive, another gate charge and another hour or so of your day.
Volume is the first squeeze. A 2 Marrel skip bin measures 1.8m long, 1.6m wide and 0.9m high, which gives it about 2.59 cubic metres of space7. A 6x4 box trailer has a floor of roughly
- 8m by 1.2m, so assuming 450mm sides, it holds about 0.97 cubic metres level-full. That means one 2 Marrel skip bin holds roughly 2.7 level loads from a 6x4 box trailer. If your pile looks bigger than that, our skip bin sizes guide shows what each bin suits.
Weight is the second squeeze. Under the trailer braking rules Transport for NSW applies, a trailer is exempt from needing brakes only up to a Gross Trailer Mass of 750kg8. If your trailer doesn't have brakes, the trailer and everything on it has to stay within that 750kg. Tiles, plasterboard and soil can get there before the trailer looks full.
Piling it higher isn't the fix either. The NSW EPA's garden waste guidance says garden waste carried in a vehicle must be covered, or you risk a fine9.
Your formula: Trips = Volume of Your Waste ÷ What Your Trailer Can Legally and Safely Carry, rounded up.
Council Tip Fees Near You
What you pay at the gate depends on the facility, but for general waste, part of the price is set by the state government. The NSW waste levy for the Metropolitan Levy Area, which includes Sydney, is $180.20 per tonne for 2026-27, up from $174.20 per tonne in 2025-264. Licensed waste facilities pay it on the waste they receive, which works out to $18.02 for every 100kg of general waste before the facility charges anything for its own costs4. That's the one part of the cost of a tip run in Sydney that the tip doesn't set.
Weighbridges are how licensed facilities keep count: the NSW EPA's Waste Levy Framework requires scheduled waste facilities to record the quantity of waste they receive10. When you ring ahead, ask for the minimum charge and the per-tonne rate, so the quote you get matches the load you're actually bringing.
Around Greenacre, council drop-off options don't stretch far for bigger jobs. City of Canterbury Bankstown runs free drop-off days at set times of year, but they only take what you'd normally put in your red or yellow bin, and they exclude building waste, green waste, mattresses and bulky items like furniture11. If you're doing it yourself, anything those days won't take, and that a booked council clean-up won't collect, means a trip to a licensed facility.
If you're local to Greenacre or Strathfield South, Aussie Recycling is open Monday to Friday 7am to 5pm and Saturday 7am to 1pm, describes its Strathfield South site as 100% undercover, and uses a dual weighbridge system to get you in and out fast5. Call 1300 11 00 11 for current drop-off rates.
Your Time Has Value Too
A tip run involves loading the trailer, strapping it down, driving, queueing at the weighbridge, unloading by hand and driving home again. Our examples allow 1.5 hours per trip, so time your last run if you want a sharper number.
What's that time worth? Two official benchmarks give you a fair range. The National Minimum Wage is $26.44 an hour from 1 July 202612. Average weekly ordinary time earnings for full-time adults were $2,083.70 in May 202613, or about $54.83 an hour over the same 38-hour week behind Fair Work's weekly minimum wage figure12.
Valued at those two benchmarks, a single 1.5-hour tip run costs you $39.66 to $82.25 in time1213. If you'd otherwise be working, picking up overtime, or simply getting your weekend back, use your own number. It's an easy line to leave out of the cost of a tip run in Sydney, and in our worked examples below, it's the biggest single line in five of the six DIY totals.
Your formula: Hours × Your Hourly Rate = Time Cost.
3 Scenarios: DIY vs. Skip Bin
Here's the cost of a tip run in Sydney worked through for three common jobs. Every DIY total below is a floor, because it includes the waste levy but not the tip's own charges on top.
The inputs are a 25km round trip plus the trip time, ATO rate and waste levy covered above. The load weights are our estimates for a typical job, not measured figures, so swap in your own. If you'd rather compare by number of runs, our skip bin vs tip run cost comparison works through one to five trips side by side.
Skip prices are Aussie Skips' general waste rates of $510 for a 2 Marrel and $600 for a 3 Marrel, plus the current 4.8% fuel surcharge, with delivery, collection and tipping included7.
Cost Line | Garage Clean-Out | Post-Reno (Small Bathroom) | Garden Tidy |
Skip bin equivalent7 | 2 Marrel: $534.48 | 3 Marrel: $628.80 | 2 Marrel: $534.48 |
Example load | 3 trailer loads, 0.5 tonnes | 4 trailer loads, 1.5 tonnes | 2 trailer loads, green waste only |
Vehicle cost1 | $68.25 | $91.00 | $45.50 |
Waste levy floor4 | $90.10 | $270.30 | Not applied (see below) |
Time at minimum wage12 | $118.98 (4.5 hrs) | $158.64 (6 hrs) | $79.32 (3 hrs) |
Time at average earnings13 | $246.75 | $329.01 | $164.50 |
DIY floor, minimum wage | $277.33 | $519.94 | $124.82 |
DIY floor, average earnings | $405.10 | $690.31 | $210.00 |
- Garage clean-out. For a three-trip garage clean-out, DIY disposal sits $257.15 under a 2 Marrel skip bin at minimum wage, before the tip's own charges. Valued at average full-time earnings, that gap shrinks to $129.38. At that rate, if the tip charges more than about $43 a visit on top of the levy, the 2 Marrel skip bin comes out cheaper.
- Post-reno. For a 1.5-tonne bathroom reno clean-up over four trailer runs, DIY disposal already costs $61.51 more than a 3 Marrel skip bin once your time is valued at average full-time earnings, before the tip charges a cent beyond the levy. At minimum wage, the 3 Marrel bin costs $108.86 more than DIY, and tip charges above about $27 a visit wipe that out.
- Garden tidy. We've left the levy out because it depends on how your facility classifies garden waste, so ask for its green waste rate. Even with your time valued at average full-time earnings, two runs of clean green waste stay under the cost of a 2 Marrel skip bin unless your tip charges more than about $162 a visit, and we'd rather tell you that than pretend otherwise. A bin earns its place when the garden job comes with broken pavers, old pots or general rubbish mixed in.
When Is It Worth Hiring a Skip Bin?
If you're weighing up rubbish removal costs in Sydney, the answer to "is it worth hiring a skip bin?" comes down to four things from the scenarios above:
- Trips. In our examples, the gap narrows once a job needs three or more runs.
- Weight. Heavy waste pushes up the levy line and the number of trips at the same time.
- Your time. The more your hour is worth, the sooner the bin wins.
- What's in the load. Mixed waste can mean more than one facility if your nearest tip won't take everything in it.
Skip bin hire vs self-disposal also comes down to two things the numbers don't show: you load a bin on your driveway at your own pace, and you skip the trailer hire, the tie-down straps and the Saturday-morning weighbridge queue.
To work out the full cost of a tip run in Sydney for your own job, add up your four lines (vehicle, levy, the tip's own charges, time) and compare the total with the bin price for your waste type. Bin size and waste type move the skip price more than anything else7, and our skip bin price guide for Sydney explains how each one shifts the number.
If your DIY total lands within $50 of the bin, ask yourself whether $50 is worth a Saturday of loading, driving and unloading.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a tip run cost in Sydney?
The cost of a tip run in Sydney is $18.20 to $27.30 per 20 to 30km return trip in vehicle running costs, at the ATO's 2026-27 rate of 91 cents per kilometre1. On top of that, general waste carries at least $18.02 per 100kg in NSW waste levy4, plus the tip's own charges and your time. A 2 Marrel skip bin's worth of waste takes about 2.7 level loads in a 6x4 trailer with 450mm sides7.
Is it cheaper to hire a skip bin or do a tip run in Sydney?
It depends on weight and the number of trips. In our 2026 worked examples, with your time valued at average full-time earnings, DIY is cheaper for a light garden tidy, a three-trip garage clean-out comes within about $130 of a $534.48 2 Marrel skip bin7, and a 1.5-tonne bathroom reno costs more than a 3 Marrel bin.
Can I use my council clean-up instead of a tip run?
Often, yes, for bulky household items. City of Canterbury Bankstown gives houses two free Clean-Ups per calendar year, each up to three cubic metres, or one combined collection of six cubic metres, though it won't take renovation waste from a contracted builder14. Other councils run different allowances, so check yours before you load the trailer. If your items qualify, a booked clean-up costs you nothing but the carry to the kerb.
What happens if I put rubbish on the kerb without a booking?
You could be fined. City of Canterbury Bankstown warns residents that putting rubbish out without a booked Clean-Up could lead to fines of up to $4,00015.
Where do paint, batteries and gas bottles go?
Not in a skip. Batteries, chemicals, gas bottles, liquids and other hazardous waste must stay out of skip bins7. Take them to a Community Recycling Centre instead. Liverpool City Council's centre at 99 Rose Street, Liverpool, takes paint, gas bottles, fire extinguishers, household and car batteries, fluorescent globes, oils and smoke detectors free of charge for residents16.
How long can I keep a skip bin?
Online bookings with Aussie Skips include up to 7 days of hire, and an additional daily charge applies after that7. Let us know your timeline when you book.
Do I need a council permit for a skip bin?
Only if the bin sits on public land, such as the road or footpath. Permit fees vary by council7. If the bin fits on your driveway or in your yard, you generally won't need one.
What happens if my skip bin goes over its weight limit?
Every bin has a maximum weight, and anything over it is charged at $330 inc GST per tonne7. Tell us roughly what's going in when you book and we'll help you pick a bin with enough weight allowance.
Is a concrete or brick skip cheaper than general waste?
Usually, yes. A 2 Marrel of clean concrete or bricks is $450, which is $60 less than the same bin for general waste, as long as the bin contains only that material7.
Does my suburb change the skip bin price?
For most of Sydney, no. A small number of outer suburbs, including Palm Beach, Avalon, Dural, Kurrajong and Thirlmere, cost $30 to $50 more for general waste and concrete bins7.
Is the skip bin fuel surcharge permanent?
No. Aussie Skips reviews the surcharge as fuel and tipping costs change, and added it as a separate line so it can be reduced or removed as those costs ease7.
