The Only Skip Bin Size Guide You'll Need in Sydney: From 2 to 14 Marrel Explained

The Only Skip Bin Size Guide You'll Need in Sydney: From 2 to 14 Marrel Explained

TL;DR: A 2 Marrel bin holds roughly 20 to 25 standard bags and suits a small bedroom clean-out. A 14 Marrel holds the equivalent of a large renovation or a full house clean-out. Here's what each size is actually good for, what it costs and how to book the right one the first time.

If "6 Marrel" means nothing to you, it's hard to tell whether you're booking too much bin or not enough. This skip bin size guide translates the skip bin sizes Sydney households and builders can book with Aussie Skips into things you can actually picture: wheelie bins, rubbish bags and real jobs. Every capacity, weight limit and price below comes from our own published specs and October 2026 pricing, so what you read here is what you'll see when you book.

What Is a Marrel and Why Does It Matter?

"Marrel" is the trade name for the standard open-top skip bin you see on Sydney driveways, the kind a truck lifts on and off with chains. The number in front is roughly the bin's capacity in cubic metres, although our published specs show the real volume runs a little higher than the label on every size.

Two numbers decide whether a bin will do the job, and the Marrel label tells you only one. The first is volume, the second is maximum weight, which rises with each size on our skip bin sizes page but not in step with volume. A bin loaded with tiles, bricks, or wet soil can hit its weight limit while still leaving plenty of room so heavy jobs need sizing by weight first.

A Marrel number is also a trade label, not a fixed unit like a litre. When you compare skip bin sizes Sydney operators advertise, check the cubic metres and max weight listed for each bin, not just the name on the side.

Skip Bin Sizes: The Full 2026 Guide

Aussie Skips stocks six Marrel skip bin sizes: 2, 3, 4, 6, 10 and 14. There's no 8 or 12 Marrel in the range. Every bin is 1.6 metres wide, so width rarely rules a size out. Length and wall height are what change as you go up.

To make the skip bin sizes Sydney customers can book easier to picture, we've converted each bin's published volume into full 240-litre wheelie bins (capacity divided by 0.24 cubic metres, rounded to the nearest whole bin).

2 Marrel skip bin

The 2 Marrel skip bin is the compact one in the range. It has no door, so everything goes in over the side, and the low walls make it easy to load bags, boxes and light furniture. It's built for light, mixed loads rather than rubble, and its short length fits tight driveways where nothing else will.

3 Marrel skip bin

This is the smallest bin with a wheelbarrow door, meaning you can push a barrow of broken tiles straight in instead of lifting every load over the side. It also doubles the 2 Marrel's weight allowance for less than one extra cubic metre of space, which is why it handles heavier small jobs.

4 Marrel skip bin

The 4 Marrel is the biggest bin before the walls get taller. It keeps the same low profile as the two smaller sizes and simply runs longer, so it's still easy to load by hand. If you're filling the bin yourself without lifting gear, this is the most space you'll get at waist height.

6 Marrel skip bin

From the 6 Marrel up, the walls step higher, so the door does more of the work. Its weight limit matches the 4 Marrel's, so the extra space is for bulk instead of weight. Think cabinetry, doors, flat-packed furniture and timber offcuts rather than a load of concrete.

10 Marrel skip bin

The 10 Marrel is the size that can swallow a mix of bulky items and heavier renovation waste in one go. With chest-high walls, you can load heavy material through the door and save lifting for the light stuff.

14 Marrel skip bin

The 14 Marrel is the largest Marrel skip bin size that Sydney customers can book with us. At close to five metres long, it needs a long driveway or a legal spot on the street, so measure before you book.

If you need something bigger again for a building site, we have hook lift bins covered in the FAQs below.

Which Skip Bin Size Do I Need?

The quickest way to answer "what size skip bin do I need?" is to match your job first, then check the weight. A common example: a 6 Marrel skip bin in Sydney holds approximately 60 to 65 standard household rubbish bags and suits a kitchen renovation.

For everything else, this table matches common jobs to the skip bin sizes Sydney customers can book, based on the use guidance on our skip bin sizes page and our 2026 pricing guides.

Choosing between skip bin sizes Sydney renovators and builders use comes down to three quick checks before you lock it in:

  1. Weigh it up. Tiles, bricks, concrete and soil reach a bin's weight limit long before they reach the rim. If most of your load is heavy, choose by the max weight column, not by volume.
  2. Picture the bulk. Cabinets, doors and couches don't compress, and awkward shapes leave gaps. Give bulky loads more room than the raw volume suggests.
  3. Size up, not out. One bin that fits the job costs less than a second bin later, according to our October 2026 price update.

Still torn between two sizes? Our bin size calculator lets you tap in items like a couch, fridge or bathtub, enter brick and concrete measurements, or upload a photo of your pile, then recommends the smallest bin that fits. It also allows for broken material bulking up once it's loose, which is easy to underestimate when you're eyeballing a pile of rubble.

What Can I Put in a Skip Bin?

No matter which skip bin size Sydney customers choose, the rules on what goes in are the same. Most household, garden and renovation waste is fine in a general waste bin. The items that aren't are the ones that put drivers, recycling staff and the environment at risk, and almost all of them have a free or dedicated disposal option.

These items are allowed in a general waste bin, according to our, “What can go in a skip bin guide”:

  • Building waste, including bricks, dry concrete, tiles, plasterboard, metal, rubble, soil, sand and rocks
  • Furniture and household goods, including white goods
  • Green waste, timber and fibre cement sheeting such as Villaboard
  • Recyclable plastics like PVC pipe, plus fabrics, clothing, bagged sawdust and new insulation

Some items can go in at an extra cost. Mattresses are $250, tyres are $160 and tree stumps over 50cm are $165 each, per our October 2026 price update. Add them when you book so they're on your invoice upfront rather than as a surprise later.

These items can't go in any general waste bin, according to the same guide: asbestos, batteries, paints, oils, chemicals and pesticides, empty paint tins and spray cans, gas bottles, fire extinguishers, oil heaters, food and liquids, medical waste, silica dust, vinyl flooring, foam, polystyrene, resin, old insulation and synthetic grass.

Here's where the most common ones should go instead:

  • Batteries: The NSW EPA recorded 285 lithium-ion battery-related fires in NSW in 2023, more than double the previous year, and warns that binned batteries are a serious fire risk for trucks and waste facilities. Take them to a battery drop-off point or Community Recycling Centre.
  • Paint, gas bottles and oils: The NSW EPA's Community Recycling Centres take household problem waste such as paint, gas bottles and car and household batteries free of charge for NSW householders. Household chemicals go to the EPA's Household Chemical CleanOut events.
  • Asbestos: The NSW Government's Asbestos in NSW guidance states asbestos can only go to a landfill licensed to accept it and must never go in a skip bin that isn't approved to hold asbestos. Aussie Skips offers dedicated bonded asbestos bins from $2,000 for a 2 Marrel, per our October 2026 price update, so call 1300 11 00 11 to arrange one.

What Happens If I Overfill My Bin?

An overfilled bin might not get collected, and if it does, you'll likely pay extra for it. Every skip bin size that customers can book has the same fill line: the rim. Our terms and conditions don't allow waste to sit higher than the top of the bin or stick out past its sides.

Under clause 70 of the Protection of the Environment Operations (Waste) Regulation 2014, waste must be covered while it's being transported, according to the NSW EPA. A bin heaped above the rim can't be covered or carried safely on Sydney roads.

Under our terms and conditions, an overfilled bin can mean:

  • No pickup. The driver can decline to collect a bin that looks overweight or has been loaded unevenly.
  • Your waste back on site. If waste sits above the rim or sticks out, the team can cancel the collection and empty the contents back onto your property.
  • Extra fees. Protruding waste can attract excess loading fees, and an overweight bin that does get collected is charged at $330 inc. GST per tonne over its limit, per our October 2026 price update.

The fix is simple. Load heavy items first and spread the weight evenly, as our loading guide recommends, then break down bulky items so they lie flat. If you can see you're running out of room halfway through, call the team before you start stacking higher.

Skip Bin Hire Pricing in Sydney

Skip bin hire in Sydney with Aussie Skips costs from $510 for a 2 Marrel up to $1,810 for a 14 Marrel for general waste, according to our October 2026 price update, with prices checked on 8 October 2026. Here's how the six skip bin sizes Sydney customers can book compare, including what you pay for each cubic metre of space.

Bin

General Waste Price

Price Per Cubic Metre

2 Marrel

$510

about $197

3 Marrel

$600

about $173

4 Marrel

$710

about $154

6 Marrel

$920

about $133

10 Marrel

$1,450

about $137

14 Marrel

$1,810

about $130

Price per cubic metre is our calculation: the published price divided by the published capacity.

From the 6 Marrel up, you pay roughly 30–34% less per cubic metre than you do on a 2 Marrel. And the 6 Marrel works out slightly cheaper per cubic metre than the 10 Marrel, so only step up to a 10 when you genuinely need the extra space or the higher weight limit.

Those prices include GST, a 4.8% fuel surcharge is added at checkout, and a handful of outer suburbs, including Palm Beach, Avalon, Dural, Kurrajong and Thirlmere, pay $30 to $50 more for general waste bins.

How to Book Your Skip Bin Online

Once you've settled on one of the skip bin sizes to book online, the rest takes three minutes, tops, through our skip bin hire Sydney booking page. Here's how it works:

  1. Enter your postcode, waste type and dates. Choose your delivery and pickup dates up front.
  2. Choose your bin. Pick the size you settled on above.
  3. Add any extra-cost items. Mattresses, tyres and large stumps get added here, before you pay.
  4. Choose where the bin goes. Your options are your front or back yard, your driveway (without blocking the footpath), the nature strip, or a non-metered parking spot on a public road.
  5. Pay online. Our site accepts Visa, Mastercard, Amex and Afterpay.

Placement affects paperwork. Bins on private property don't need a council permit, while bins on the road, footpath or nature strip usually do, according to our council permits page, which links to the application form for each Sydney council.

Aussie Skips is also a registered supplier with councils including Burwood, Blacktown, Randwick and Woollahra, where a separate permit generally isn't needed.

In a hurry? Book before 10am Monday to Friday, or before 9am on Saturday, for same-day delivery, according to our homepage. There are no Sunday deliveries.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many bags fit in a 2 Marrel skip bin?

A 2 Marrel skip bin holds roughly 20 to 25 standard rubbish bags, making it the smallest of the skip bin sizes Sydney customers can book with Aussie Skips. That's enough for a bedroom clear-out or a small batch of household junk, as long as the total stays under the bin's 1 tonne limit.

Does Aussie Skips have 8 Marrel or 12 Marrel bins?

No. The skip bin sizes Sydney customers can book with Aussie Skips run 2, 3, 4, 6, 10 and 14 Marrel, per our skip bin sizes page. If your job falls between a 6 and a 10, start with the 6 Marrel, since it's better value per cubic metre, and only step up if your waste is heavy or won't fit.

What size skip bin do I need for a bathroom renovation?

A single bathroom renovation usually fits a 3 or 4 Marrel, according to our 2026 pricing guide. If you're ripping out the bath, vanity and every tile, go with the 4 Marrel so the heavier waste stays within its limit.

Can I put green waste in a general waste skip bin?

Yes. We accept grass clippings, shrub and yard clippings, timber and tree logs under 50cm thick in a general waste bin, per our what can go in a skip bin guide. Anything thicker is charged as a stump.

Can I put concrete, bricks or soil in a skip bin?

Yes, with a catch. They're accepted in a general waste bin but use up the weight limit fast. If your load is only concrete and bricks, a dedicated concrete and brick bin is cheaper: a 2 Marrel costs $450, which is $60 less than the same bin for general waste, according to our October 2026 price update. Soil-only bins cost more because of the weight, starting at $830 for a 2 Marrel. Single-material bins must contain only that material.

What's the difference between a Marrel bin and a hook lift bin?

Hook lift bins sit above the Marrel range in the skip bin sizes Sydney builders can book. Our hook lift range runs from 13 to 30 cubic metres, each with a swing door that suits bobcats, forklifts and wheelbarrows, per our skip bin sizes page. Each has a 4-tonne limit, lower than the 14 Marrel's, so they're built for bulky volume rather than dense rubble. They're priced from $1,490 to $2,660 for general waste in our October 2026 price update.

How long can I keep my skip bin?

Online bookings include up to 7 days of hire, according to our October 2026 price update and our terms and conditions. Keep it longer and an additional daily hire charge applies, so set your pickup date to match your project when you book

.

Can I change or cancel my skip bin booking?

Yes, with notice. Under our terms and conditions, you can cancel or change an order with written notice at least two business days before delivery. Cancelling with less notice costs 10% of the order, and cancelling on the delivery day costs 25%.

Where does my waste go after pickup?

General waste collected by Aussie Skips goes into our own processing chain at the Aussie Recycling centres in Greenacre and Strathfield South, not to a third party, according to our 2026 pricing guide. Both sites are EPA-licensed facilities with Green Star accreditation.
